Inlays and onlays are similar to traditional crowns. The difference is that they only cover the top part of the tooth whereas traditional crowns cover the entire tooth above the gum. Inlays are placed on the inside of a tooth whereas onlays extend over the cusps to prevent fracture. Inlays are strong and durable compared to normal fillings. Onlays preserves more of the tooth and in certain situations can be a better option than crowns. Modern improved bonding techniques has led to great developments with onlays and inlays that are aesthetically superior and just as stable as full crowns.
Your dentist will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment in order to help you make an informed decision.
